What is PATS key?
With the rising rate of insecurity and theft of motor vehicles, you need an effective and efficient anti-theft and alarm system. One of the most trusted systems is the passive anti-theft system (PATS) as it uses a radio frequency identification technology to scare away thieves. The good thing about this system is that just like the name suggests, it does not require you to perform any activity.
Features of PATS Key
- One of the easiest ways to distinguish PATS Key from other systems is that it uses ignition key that is specifically encoded. The encoded ignition key contains an installed electronic device known as the transponder which contains an electronic identification code that has more than 70 million combinations. It is good to note that the encoded ignition keys are permanently installed.
- The encoded key of the PATS key is usually larger than the common ignition key and does not require battery has it has a very long shelf life just like the vehicle.
- The PATS key has a visual theft indicator which is located on top of the instrument panel. When you turn the ignition switch on, the indicator will prove out for about three seconds. If there is a problem with the PATS key, the flash tends to glow steadily or glow for more than five seconds.
How it works
Before you start using the PATS key, there has to be some programming of the encoded ignition key to the vehicle powertrain control module and a procedure followed to ensure that the encoded ignition is configured.
Once the configuration has been done, the transceiver which is located behind the steering column communicates to the encoded ignition key. Each time the vehicle starts, the transceiver reads the ignition key identification code then sends the data to the PCM. This is one of the most important modules of the ignition system as it is responsible for carrying out all PATS functions.
Caution
Ensure that all elements of the PATS key are functional because the vehicle will not start if the one or more elements of the system are not working.it is also important to note that PATS Is not compatible with the aftermarket remote start system which allows you to start the vehicle even when you are outside. When coming up with the identification code, do not come up with consecutive numbers because most thieves are able to crack down such codes.
Before you buy the PATS key you need to understand what kind of a vehicle you own because this system is mainly used in Ford family trucks, suvs, Ford family cars and midi-vans.
