If your Jeep Wrangler was made in the years 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 or 1997 your vehicle have no chip in the key. If you have lost all keys and you do not have a spare key, there are two options for a new Jeep Wrangler key. The first is to go to the Jeep dealer or a local locksmith store with the VIN and a proof of ownership (title/registration/insurance) and the second is to call a mobile locksmith company who will come out to your location to cut you a key om the spot.
If the igition is not the original one that came with the car, the whole ignition might need to be replaced.
Jeep Wrangler transponder key
If your Jeep Wrangler was made in the years 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 or 2004 and you have a grey plastic head key, your vehicle probably contain an immobiliser system.
Jeep Wrangler remote head key
If your Jeep Wrangler was made in the years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 or 2017, your vehicle might use a remote head key. This key is more expensive of course, but alternately a non-remote key can be used in their place.
Duplicating Jeep Wrangler transponder and remote head keys
If the driver have two existing programmed keys, Jeep Wrangler may have additional keys added using a simple on-board procedure.
Program additional Jeep Wrangler key
- Insert the first functional key into the ignition slot. Turn the ignition to the ON/RUN position for 3-15 seconds. Then, Turn the ignition to the OFF/LOCK position and remove the key.
- Insert the second functional key into the ignition and within 15 seconds, turn the switch to the ON/RUN position. A chime should sound after 10 seconds, the security light should flash.
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position and remove the second key.
- Within 60 seconds insert the new key into the ignition slot. Turn the switch to the ON/RUN position. After 10 seconds a single chime should sound and the security light should stop flashing to indicate that the programming is complete.
- The new key and the remote transmitter is now programmed.
- Repeat this procedure to program up to 8 keys.
Lost Jeep Wrangler transponder and remote head keys
If there is only one key available or user lost all the keys to the vehicle, the vehicle must be connected to diagnostic equipment, the computer should be reprogrammed to accept a new key and reject the old one. For this process the vehicle should get towed to the dealer or a mobile locksmith come out to your location.
